Students and staff at Ð԰ɵç̨ are being invited to learn all about Ramadan as part of the latest Campus Collective Sustainability event on campus.

Ð԰ɵç̨ Imam Mohammed Laher will be giving a presentation and answering staff and students’ questions at the Ramadan Unpacked event in the SDG Impact Hub in Heritage House, on Wednesday, February 19, from noon until 1.30pm.

The Imam will be joined at the event by two Ð԰ɵç̨ students, who will be talking about their experiences of the holy month of Ramadan, which begins later this month, and the issues surrounding fasting throughout daylight hours.

Imam Mohammed said: “People don’t necessarily associate the prayer room with the SDGs but we are really committed to the agenda and we want to share that. Also, we want people to understand what it is like for students during Ramadan at Ð԰ɵç̨ to share in the experience and offer support and understanding to those who are fasting.”

The holy month of Ramadan, which alters each year depending on the lunar cycle, is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar and is scheduled to begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, and end around the Saturday, March 29, with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

All healthy Muslims are expected to fast from dawn, around 6.45am during March, until approximately 5.45pm as dusk falls. Other acts of worship are also encouraged during this period, such as praying, reading the Quran and charity.

Dr Mark Charlton, the Associate Director of the SDG Impact Hub, said: “The event is primarily for non-Muslims to give them more of an insight and information on the holy month of Ramadan, although of course everyone is welcome.

“It promises to be a fascinating talk that hopefully will be useful to both non-Muslims and Muslims alike.”

The Muslim Chaplain at Ð԰ɵç̨ will also be talking about his work and the expansion of the prayer room, which is in the Portland Building on campus.
